Economic Development

It is critical we begin now to further diversify and develop Alaska's economy to expand beyond our heavy dependence on simple resource extraction. A growing and sustainable economy will enable our kids to have jobs here and a future in Alaska. While Alaska's strong oil and gas industry will continue to be a critical foundation to our economy, much of our future economy will come from sustainable resource development such as hydro electric, value-added seafood processing, tourism, air cargo, and other alternative energy development.

Energy

Gasline - As Governor, I will work to make Alaskans' long-time dream of a North Slope gas line a reality. I'll build on the work that's come before me to get natural gas resources to Alaskans and new revenues to state coffers. I will not waste time re-inventing Alaska's approach to bringing North Slope gas to market unless required to do so due to a failed pipeline "open season".

Education

Education at all levels is critical to Alaska's future. Considering the costs to society for crime, prisons, drug abuse, and long term poverty, providing a good education for all Alaskans is a far better investment.

Social Issues

Health - As someone who has helped to create successful health care groups like the Alaska Heart Institute and the Anchorage Women's Clinic, I know we have a wide range of heath care solutions available to Alaskans. Hospitals like Providence, Fairbanks Memorial, Alaska Regional, and Bartlett Regional have grown significantly in the range of services now offered in state. Alaska Tribal organizations are today delivering award winning health care services to rural and Native Alaskans. But our seniors, especially in Anchorage, are finding it difficult to access primary care physicians, because Medicare reimbursement is inadequate to even allow the doctor to break even.

Environment and Wildlife Management

I'm pro-environment. Like most Alaskans - I have spent a good amount of my time here in the wilderness. I will protect Alaska's environment. It's why we live here. Alaskans came here and stay here for the natural beauty, the clean air and water. We don't want to screw it up.
